Why good resumes get filtered out
An ATS parses your resume into structured data, matches it against the job's keywords, ranks it, and filters it before any recruiter is involved. Up to 75% of applications are rejected at this stage, usually for mechanical reasons:
- Formatting the parser can't read: tables, text boxes, columns, graphics, or contact details buried in headers and footers.
- Non-standard section headers: "Where I've Made an Impact" instead of "Work Experience" confuses parsing and loses whole sections.
- Missing keywords: the exact terms the role screens for, including both spelled-out and acronym forms ("Search Engine Optimization (SEO)").
- File format issues: image-based PDFs and corrupted exports that parse as noise.
The checker flags each of these on your actual resume, with specific fixes. It then scores the content itself (impact, role alignment, language), because parsing cleanly only matters if what gets parsed ranks well. ATS resume checker FAQ
What is an ATS?
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software companies use to collect, parse, and rank job applications before a recruiter reads them. 98% of Fortune 500 companies use one, and up to 75% of resumes are filtered out before a human ever sees them.
What does the ATS check look for?
Four things ATS software actually evaluates: whether your formatting parses cleanly (no tables, text boxes, or graphics that scramble parsing), whether you use standard section headers it can recognize, whether your keywords match what the role screens for, and whether your file format is machine-readable.
Can a PDF pass an ATS?
Yes. A properly formatted, text-based PDF works with modern ATS software. Problems come from image-based (scanned) PDFs and heavy visual formatting. Our checker flags both.
Will keyword stuffing improve my score?
No. Modern ATS systems and recruiters both detect unnatural keyword usage, and hidden white-text keywords get applications flagged or rejected. The fix is relevant, contextual keyword placement, which is exactly what the keyword analysis shows you.
Is the ATS resume checker free?
Yes. Your first full analysis (ATS readiness plus every other category and the overall score) is free with no credit card. Unlimited checks come with Pro; see the Pricing page.
How is this different from other ATS checkers?
Generic ATS checkers test formatting in a vacuum. HireLab checks ATS readiness as part of a full analysis tailored to your target role and company, so you fix parsing issues AND the keyword and content gaps that actually decide whether you rank high enough to be seen.
